Award Success for The Sydney Opera House at the Unesco Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage

The Joan Sutherland Theatre at the Sydney Opera House has received the “Award for New Design in Heritage Contexts” at the UNESCO 2019 Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Held in Penang, Malaysia, the awards recognise the crucial role of both private individuals and institutions in protecting these vulnerable sites.

UNESCO seeks to encourage the conservation of the region’s cultural heritage for the benefit of current and future generations. Since 2000, UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation have been honouring excellent achievement in successfully conserving heritage buildings that have a clear understanding and application of a conservation criteria, including the articulation of the spirit of place, technical achievement and retention of social and cultural values.

Congratulations to the Studio.SC team and to the Sydney Opera House for taking out this significant award, in conjunction Design 5 as heritage consultant. It has been a privilege to support the Opera House’s renewal works over the last 9 years, and to contribute to the renewal of an architectural icon.
