Sydney Airport Southern Bag Room
Mascot NSW
Complex Business Critical Infrastructure
The Southern Bag Room project has been designed as a large-format, flexible and boutique building structure that houses specialist baggage handling facilities and detection equipment.

At 170m long by 70m wide, the ‘shed’ is a naturally ventilated facility that in conjunction with the automated baggage handling equipment, provides a new loading dock for the airport (including its extensive retail and F&B offer), an expansion to the departure check in level, and has been designed to accommodate a future on terminal transit hotel.

With 30,000m² internally of equipment levels, a key technical aspect to the project is the baggage handling facility that provides a fully automated process, from receipt of bag, scanning (for dangerous goods) to loading on airside for transportation to aircraft. The building has been designed to accommodate highly complex equipment whilst allowing for flexibility in future adaptation of conveyor pathways both horizontally and vertically through the building levels.

The modular facade system integrates a repetitive and dynamic graduation of translucent and solid treatments to balance the natural light with building performance, while creating a kinetic effect to passing vehicles.
